I disagree that people in the United States are provincial. It seems to me that we pay just as much attention to foreign countries, and foreign cultures, as they deserve. After all, why should we inflate the importance of some place that simply doesn't have much influence on global events?
The map below should illustrate what I mean. US states are given the names of the countries that most closely match their GDP.
